Distribution System Protection

This course is a must for engineers and electricians who wanted to have a comprehensive understanding of the methods and solutions in protecting medium-voltage utility-type distribution systems.

This course covers the principles, schemes and practices for protecting distribution feeders, buses and transformers.

Course Outline

  1. Power system faults – generator equations, Thevenin equivalent circuit, fault on radial line, fault on looped system
  2. Distribution system topology – radial, looped, primary systems.
  3. Power system grounding – ungrounded, solidly grounded, low-impedance, high-resistance grounding
  4. Relay design concepts – digital relay architecture, analog to digital conversion, relay algorithms, digital filtering
  5. Equipment damage and protection concepts
  6. Protection systems – power system protection and control, DC tripping, zones of protection, circuit breakers, primary protection, backup protection, remote backup, local backup
  7. Instrument transformers – operation characteristics, selection criteria to avoid saturation
  8. Line overcurrent protection – 50/51, 50Q/51Q, 50N/51N
  9. Overcurrent device coordination
  10. Line Directional overcurrent protection – 67/67Q/67N
  11. Line Distance protection – 21/21N
  12. Line Differential protection – 87/87Q/87N
  13. Transformer protection – overcurrent protection (50/51), differential protection (87), restricted earth fault (REF) protection, overexcitation (24),
  14. Transformer protection (mechanical protection) – thermal protection, sudden-pressure protection
  15. Bus protection – partial protection, partial differential protection, zone-interlocked protection, fault-bus protection
